Argos

Argos is an open-source visual testing platform built for modern engineering teams who need to catch UI regressions before they reach production. The whole platform — backend, frontend, and screenshot comparison engine — is developed in the open under the MIT license in the argos-ci/argos repository. It operates as a managed cloud service and integrates directly into CI pipelines via SDKs for Playwright, Cypress, Storybook, WebdriverIO, and a CLI.

What It Is

Argos sits between your test suite and your pull request workflow. When tests run in CI, they capture screenshots or file snapshots; Argos uploads them, compares them against a baseline build using deterministic pixel diffing, and surfaces the diffs directly on the pull request. Reviewers can approve expected changes or reject regressions without leaving their normal code review flow. How the Diff Engine Works

A built-in stabilization engine filters out flakiness at the source rather than hiding it behind tolerance thresholds. AI Agent Workflow

A notable product angle is first-class support for AI coding agents. Every diff visible in the Argos UI is also available as structured data from the CLI and over MCP, so agents can read what their change did without needing to parse screenshots. The homepage describes a workflow where an agent like Claude Code pushes a commit, Argos flags regressions, the agent self-corrects and pushes again, and only the remaining intentional changes reach the human reviewer queue. Agents can also upload screen recordings from the terminal, which Argos posts as PR comments so reviewers can see a feature demo without checking out the branch.

Collaborative Review Features

Argos supports team-based review directly on diffs. Reviewers can pin comments to specific pixels, tag teammates or agents, and track approval status per snapshot. The activity feed on each build shows who approved, who requested changes, and what was said — keeping design, engineering, and QA on the same page without switching tools. Notifications flow to Slack and Microsoft Teams.

Deployment and Storybook Hosting

Beyond visual diffing, Argos includes a deployment feature that hosts static builds — Storybook, Vite, Next.js exports, or plain HTML — on immutable preview URLs for every PR, with a stable production domain on merge. Access protection lets teams keep previews private while leaving production public.

Open-Source Lineage and Current Status

The repository was created in December 2016 and, per GitHub metadata, was last pushed in August 2026, indicating active ongoing development. The project holds an MIT license and had 611 stars and 60 forks at the time of data collection. The docs note that self-hosting is not officially supported or documented — the production setup targets AWS with PostgreSQL, RabbitMQ, Redis, S3, and DynamoDB — and that the managed cloud service is the supported path.
