About Chopin
Chopin is a research prototype from GitHub Next, built by Krzysztof Cieślak and Maggie Appleton, for planning software features collaboratively with agents. Teams write plans together in a shared MDX-based editor with an agent present as another participant. GitHub Next describes it as a very small, early prototype and says it is open source.
What It Is
Chopin is a real-time, multiplayer planning environment. Plans are organized around GitHub repos and shared with anyone who has repo access. Users and agents edit the same document, and a chat room beside the plan lets everyone discuss ideas, ask the agent to make edits, integrate comments, or do research.
How Collaborative Planning Works
The editor is WYSIWYG and MDX-based, so plans can embed rich components such as tabs, charts, diagrams and math formulas. Comment threads can be attached anywhere in the document, and the agent can update the plan to resolve them. A research block lets a user ask the agent to investigate a question and place a report inline. A persistent log links decisions, comment-thread outcomes and answers to agent questions to the relevant parts of the plan, and stays current as the plan changes.
Agent Access and Design Goals
An MCP server lets any agent work with Chopin: a user can start in their agent of choice, hand the plan to Chopin to refine with teammates, then return to the agent for implementation. The project is framed around four gaps in current planning tools: interactivity, team collaboration, decision ownership and visual explanations.
Current Status
GitHub Next lists Chopin as a Research Prototype and says it is neither a product nor a finished prototype and does not recommend using it yet. It is the spiritual successor to Ace, a real-time multiplayer agentic engineering product that is paused until further notice.
