About Foyle
Foyle is an open-source copilot by Jeremy Lewi that works inside VSCode Notebooks through the Runme extension. As you describe your intent in a markup cell, it suggests code cells containing commands you can run. The latest release listed on GitHub is v0.0.45, published December 29, 2024.
What It Is
Foyle is an AI assistant and literate environment aimed at software engineers who deploy and operate applications. Instead of remembering complex commands, a developer writes what they want in natural language and Foyle proposes the commands to achieve it. Because it lives in VSCode Notebooks, a single UI is used both to interact with LLMs and to execute the suggested commands.
How the Workflow Operates
A local Foyle server runs with foyle serve and is configured with an OpenAI API key. The Runme extension in VSCode is then pointed at the server through its AI Base URL setting, which defaults to port 8877. When you edit markup cells in a markdown file or notebook, Foyle suggests code cells that can be run.
Learning From Execution
The README states that as you execute commands, Foyle learns to predict those commands from the cells preceding them, which is meant to make suggestions more accurate over time.
Setup Path
Installation starts with downloading a release binary from GitHub; on Mac the quarantine attribute may need to be removed. Documentation covers getting started, how-tos, an operator manual, a developer guide, and tech notes. The project is released under the Apache License 2.0.
