Model Context Protocol Servers
A collection of reference MCP server implementations that demonstrate Model Context Protocol features and SDK usage for connecting LLMs to tools and data.

About Model Context Protocol Servers
This repository, hosted under the modelcontextprotocol GitHub organization, holds reference implementations of servers for the Model Context Protocol (MCP). The README says they are managed by Anthropic and built together with the community. They are intended as educational examples for developers building their own MCP servers, not as production-ready solutions.
What It Is
The repository is a set of reference MCP servers that show how to give large language models controlled access to tools and data sources. MCP itself is described by its documentation as an open-source standard for connecting AI applications such as Claude or ChatGPT to external systems like files, databases, search engines and specialized workflows. Each server is typically built with one of the official MCP SDKs, which include C#, Go, Java, Kotlin, PHP, Python, Ruby, Rust, Swift and TypeScript.
Reference Servers
The maintained servers include Everything (a reference and test server with prompts, resources and tools), Fetch (web content fetching and conversion), Filesystem (file operations with configurable access controls), Git (reading, searching and manipulating repositories), Memory (a knowledge graph-based persistent memory), Sequential Thinking (reflective problem solving through thought sequences) and Time (timezone conversion). Several earlier servers, such as GitHub, PostgreSQL, Puppeteer and Slack, have been archived in a separate servers-archived repository.
Setup Path
TypeScript-based servers run directly with npx, for example the Memory server via the @modelcontextprotocol/server-memory package. Python-based servers run with uvx or pip, for example mcp-server-git. A server on its own is not very useful, so it is configured into an MCP client such as Claude Desktop through a JSON mcpServers entry that specifies the command and arguments. On Windows, npx entries are wrapped with cmd /c.
Current Status
The latest release listed is v2.1.0. The README points users looking for a broader list of servers to the MCP Registry, and notes that the repository only houses the small number of reference servers maintained by the MCP steering group. It warns that developers should evaluate their own security requirements and add safeguards suited to their threat model. Per the license file, new contributions are Apache-2.0 while existing code remains under MIT.
