About MongoDB
MongoDB is a document database and data platform for building applications and AI agents. It is available as the fully managed MongoDB Atlas cloud service, as the free source-available Community Edition, and as the self-managed Enterprise Advanced edition. The company states that MongoDB 9.0 is its latest major version.
What It Is
MongoDB stores data as documents that map to objects in code, with a unified Query API, rich indexing, native sharding and built-in replication. MongoDB Atlas runs across AWS, Azure and Google Cloud and combines operational, transactional, search, vector search, stream processing, analytical, graph and geospatial workloads in one platform. Developers can work through official drivers, the Compass GUI, the Atlas CLI and the official MongoDB MCP Server.
AI and Agent Capabilities
Atlas Vector Search integrates operational and vector data for semantic search, recommendation engines, Q&A systems, anomaly detection and context for generative AI apps. Voyage AI embedding and reranking models help applications and agents retrieve relevant context. Atlas Agent Engine, in public preview, is described by MongoDB as an execution, memory and governance layer for running production agents, with memory, retrieval and policy controls.
Deployment Options
Users can choose Atlas, Enterprise Advanced for on-premises, private cloud or hybrid environments, or Community Edition for local and self-managed use. The Atlas CLI sets up local Atlas environments, including Atlas Search and Vector Search. Atlas Infinite, also in public preview, lets compute and storage scale independently; MongoDB claims a 96%+ reduction in scaling time.
Security
MongoDB lists authentication and authorization, auditing, network security and encryption, including Queryable Encryption for data in use.
