About Open GSD (Git Ship Done)

Open GSD is a context-engineering and spec-driven development framework built in public under the MIT license. Originally called "Get Shit Done" (GSD), the project was renamed to Git Ship Done to better reflect its core workflow: structured git-backed milestones that take agentic work from intent to shipped code without losing scope, state, or verification. It is developed by a small crew led by Jeremy McSpadden, an IT/security operator in Panama City, FL, and is available as both a framework and a standalone CLI.

    What It Is

Open GSD is an operating loop — not a chat prompt or another AI wrapper — designed to keep AI coding agents aligned and auditable across long-running projects. It solves "context rot," the quality degradation that accumulates as an AI fills its context window, by running heavy research, planning, and execution work in fresh-context subagents while keeping the main session lean. The framework integrates with Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI, Cursor, Windsurf, Copilot, OpenCode, Antigravity CLI, Kimi CLI, Kilo, and more.

    The Phase Loop

Every milestone in GSD Core repeats the same five-step loop:

    • Discuss — capture implementation decisions before anything is planned
    • Plan — research, decompose, and verify the plan fits a fresh context window
    • Execute — run plans in parallel waves; each executor starts with a clean 200k-token context
    • Verify — walk through what was built; diagnose and fix before declaring done
    • Ship — create the PR, archive the phase, and repeat for the next milestone

Structured artifacts like STATE.md and CONTEXT.md survive session boundaries, so plans, current position, decisions, and handoffs become durable project artifacts the next run can load.

    Product Surface

Open GSD ships across four surfaces:

    • gsd-core — the framework, dropped into an existing AI coding runtime via npx @opengsd/gsd-core@latest
    • gsd-pi — a terminal-native standalone CLI harness for autonomous milestones, context hygiene, worktrees, checks, cost tracking, and recovery
    • gsd-workbench — a local desktop workspace for projects, threads, plans, backlog, evidence, and ship handoffs (coming soon)
    • gsd-cloud — a managed workspace for cross-device project state, remote milestones, and team visibility (coming soon)

A companion product, gsd-browser, provides deterministic Chrome control via MCP tools, semantic actions, assertions, recordings, traces, visual evidence, and human takeover support.

    Open-Source Lineage and Community

The gsd-core repository is MIT-licensed and hosted at github.com/open-gsd/gsd-core. The project is built in public with a visible roadmap, public promise page, and community Discord. The roadmap currently shows trust and recovery work for gsd-pi as the active milestone, with Workbench project state and guided planning next, followed by hosted continuity across devices. Community ports such as gsd-opencode (an OpenCode port by a community contributor) have already appeared, reflecting early ecosystem growth.

    Update: v1.9.1

The latest release of gsd-core is v1.9.1, published in July 2026. The repository's default branch is next, signaling active development. Documentation for version 1.7.0 changes is included in the repo, and the project supports multiple languages in its README (English, Portuguese, Simplified Chinese, Japanese, and Korean), indicating a growing international contributor base. The GitHub repository reports over 7,600 stars and 530 forks as of early August 2026, per the project's own GitHub metadata.
