About OpenAgents
OpenAgents, developed by OpenAgentsInc, is an open-source composable general agent reachable from the web, phone and desktop apps, the terminal, and an API. According to its README, it brings in specialized members for each request and sends each step to whichever member, model, or computer serves it best. Its first member, Coder, reached 1.0 on 2026-10-15 and is released under the Apache 2.0 license.
What It Is
OpenAgents is a general agent assembled from several parts: a typed decision layer (System 1) that decides what each step needs before a large model runs, members such as plugins, knowledge entries, agents and computers, and an evidence process that measures each member with and without it before admitting it to the defaults. Requests, runs and payments are recorded as signed Nostr records, and payments use Bitcoin over Lightning.
Coder, the First Member
Coder is a coding metaharness that sits in front of coding agents a user already has, including Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode, Grok Build, Devin CLI and Cursor, and decides what each step needs. It runs as a terminal and headless program, as a resident host on a user's computers, and as the cloud chat worker. The terminal supports live chat, plugins, model selection and ATIF session export, and the openagents coder command can drive it from scripts. Coder 1.0.0 is documented for macOS, Linux and Windows, installed with a shell or PowerShell script and started with coder in a project folder.
Plugins, the Gym, and XP
A plugin can add skills, workflows, knowledge, Wasm modules and tests to Coder. openagents plugin test runs a test set with and without the plugin to measure its effect, and a hosted runner can do the same. The Gym holds pinned suites and results, and XP records accepted, evidence-backed contributions; the README states XP cannot be spent or transferred.
Surfaces and Verse
The same agent is available at openagents.com chat, on iOS and desktop apps (documented as in testing), through the openagents command, and through an API at api.openagents.com/v1 that includes OpenAI-compatible models, decisions, projects, computers and saved agents. Verse is a Rust-built shared world, with the Everglade town, where persistent agents such as Alice work and can be followed and steered.
