At a Glance
About Oxc
Oxc, the JavaScript Oxidation Compiler, is an open-source collection of JavaScript and TypeScript tooling written in Rust. It is developed by VoidZero Inc. and contributors and released under the MIT License. The project includes a linter (Oxlint), a formatter (Oxfmt), a parser, a transformer, a minifier and a module resolver.
What It Is
Oxc is a toolchain for working with JavaScript and TypeScript code. Developers can lint a codebase with npx oxlint@latest or format it with npx oxfmt@latest. Tool authors can also build on the parser, transformer, minifier and resolver. According to the README, Oxc is part of VoidZero's vision of a unified JavaScript toolchain and powers Rolldown, the bundler for Vite.
The Tools
- Oxlint is an ESLint-compatible linter. The site lists 800+ rules, type-aware linting powered by tsgo, and support for ESLint JS plugins. It claims to be 50-100x faster than ESLint.
- Oxfmt is a Prettier-compatible formatter, labeled Beta, with Tailwind class sorting. The site claims it is 30x faster than Prettier and 3x faster than Biome.
- oxc-parser parses .js(x) and .ts(x) files. The site says it passes all Test262 stage 4 tests and is 3x faster than SWC.
- oxc-transform handles TypeScript and JSX, syntax lowering to ES2015, isolated declarations DTS emit, and React Fast Refresh and styled-components support.
- oxc-resolver provides Node.js-compatible CJS and ESM module resolution aligned with enhanced-resolve. The site claims it is 28x faster than enhanced-resolve.
- oxc-minify (Alpha) performs dead code elimination, syntax shortening, whitespace removal and variable name mangling.
- A TypeScript runner and an online playground are also linked from the site.
Ecosystem Use
The README states that Rolldown and Nuxt use Oxc for parsing, and that several projects use the resolver or Oxlint. The homepage also announces React Compiler support in a recent blog post.
