About Tembo
Tembo is a cloud platform for running AI coding agents across engineering teams, built by Tembo Data Systems. It provides the infrastructure layer that connects agents like Claude Code, Codex, and Cursor to your repositories, issue trackers, and communication tools, then surfaces output for human review before anything merges. The company has raised $20M, including a $14M Series A led by GreatPoint Ventures, and is led by co-founders with backgrounds including Astronomer.io.
What It Is
Tembo sits between your team's existing tools and the AI coding agents you already use. Rather than replacing individual coding assistants, it gives those agents a place to run in the cloud — connected to your repos, tickets, docs, and dependencies — while keeping humans in control of what gets merged. The platform handles both foreground sessions (where engineers work hands-on with agents in live cloud environments) and background agents (triggered from Slack, Linear, GitHub, schedules, or webhooks, running autonomously and pinging the team when output is ready).
The Tembo Stack
The platform is structured as a layered stack:
- Large Language Models — Model-agnostic; supports Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, Azure OpenAI, and AWS Bedrock. Switch models per task with no migrations.
- Agentic Harness — Harness-agnostic orchestration supporting Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, OpenCode, Amp, and others.
- Cloud Runtime — Every agent session runs in its own isolated cloud VM, preloaded with the repo, tools, and dependencies. VMs support up to 128 GB RAM and 500 GB disk.
- Context & Connections — Shared context across repos, tickets (Linear, Jira, Asana), docs (Notion), alerts (Sentry, Datadog, PostHog), and communication tools (Slack, Microsoft Teams, GitHub).
- Product / Control Plane — A central dashboard to deploy, observe, and operate every agent across the organization.
- Security & Governance — SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001, ISO 42001, HIPAA, and GDPR support; SSO via SAML/OIDC; RBAC; centralized audit logs.
Core Use Cases
Tembo's website highlights three primary workflows teams run today:
- Automated code review — Agents check out code, run tests and builds, catch visual regressions, and leave actionable PR comments on every pull request.
- Code migration & modernization — Framework upgrades, library migrations, and large-scale refactors verified by tests.
- Incident triage & bug fixing — Sentry alerts trigger fix PRs automatically; humans review and approve before resolution.
Agents can also be triggered by @mention in Slack, Linear, Jira, or GitHub PR comments using natural language, with no additional setup required.
Deployment Model
Tembo offers two deployment paths. The fully managed cloud option runs on Tembo's infrastructure with isolated, ephemeral environments and SOC 2 compliance. The self-hosted option lets organizations deploy inside their own AWS, GCP, or Azure account — or fully air-gapped on-premises — so code, keys, and data never leave the organization's perimeter. The self-hosted path is positioned for financial services, healthcare, government, and other regulated industries.
Security and Governance
Every session — whether started by a human or an agent — is centrally logged and traceable. The platform enforces human approval before any agent output merges, with configurable approval gates per team, repo, or agent type. Role-based access control operates at the team, repo, and agent level. SSO supports Okta, Azure AD, Google Workspace, and any SAML 2.0 or OIDC-compliant provider. Audit logs can be exported to a SIEM or compliance tooling.
Adoption Signal
The Tembo website publishes vendor-attributed customer results: Tilt recorded 1,200 agent-authored PRs from March through August with a July merge rate of 81% (up from 64% in April); Integral reports 98% of dependency upgrades automated with a 75–80% merge rate for generated PRs. Tembo also states that roughly half of its own code ships through the platform.
