About Volcano
Volcano is an AI infrastructure platform created by Kong, according to its homepage, to bring production readiness to the AI world. It bundles the backend services that apps and agents run on into a single project, including Postgres databases, functions, frontend hosting, authentication, realtime, file storage and distributed locks. Users can install a CLI through npm and sign up for a free account.
What It Is
Volcano describes itself as AI infrastructure for agents and applications. Instead of assembling separate services, developers get a set of building blocks in one project: data, compute, hosting, identity, messaging and coordination. The homepage shows the CLI being set up alongside tools such as Claude Code, Codex and Cursor.
Data and Compute
The homepage describes branchable PostgreSQL databases with pgvector and row-level security, and says a copy can be branched in under a minute. Backups and point-in-time restore are listed on Superagent. Functions run agents and APIs in Node.js, Python or Ruby, served from the closest of eight regions, with geo-fencing for data-sensitive workloads.
Durable Workflows and Coordination
Durable functions are described as multi-step workflows that checkpoint every step and resume where they stopped, for up to a year. Retries with backoff, long waits and cron schedules are built in. Distributed locks let agents, workers and durable functions coordinate so at most one holder works on a task at a time, with leases that renew while work runs.
Hosting, Auth and Realtime
Frontend hosting deploys Next.js from source to a global CDN with TLS and DDoS protection, and the site states that a failed build never replaces the live version. Authentication offers sign-in with Google, GitHub, Microsoft or Apple, plus anonymous users that can convert. Realtime listens to database events and supports broadcast and presence tracking. File storage provides private-by-default buckets with SQL-style access policies, per-file public links and resumable uploads.
Setup Path
The homepage shows installing the CLI with npm, followed by a setup command. Documentation and a getting-started guide are linked from the site. A quote on the homepage from Kong's CTO and co-founder calls Volcano a battery-included platform.
