About Genex Desktop
Genex Desktop is an open-source desktop app from genex.games for making games with AI. Users describe a game in chat, and a multi-agent workflow builds it alongside generated assets. It is available for macOS (Apple Silicon) and Linux, with Windows listed as coming soon; the README notes the project is early and may have rough edges.
What It Is
Genex is an AI harness for game development. A main agent plans, workers build, and reviewers judge the result, and users can choose a model for each role. It runs on a Claude Code or ChatGPT (Codex) subscription the user already has, or on local models through Ollama or Bonsai. According to the FAQ, the app never sees subscription tokens and does not fall back to paying per call.
Currently it targets Three.js games that run in the browser. Projects stay as ordinary files on the user's computer and can be exported as a static web bundle or published on genex.games.
Plugins and Asset Tools
Plugins give the agents new tools. The Blender plugin handles local 3D modeling, rigging and GLB export with an installed Blender. The Genex tools router connects to services such as Meshy, Tripo, ElevenLabs and others for 3D models, characters, textures, images, video, sound, music and voice. Users can browse a marketplace, install plugins from GitHub, load local plugins, or scaffold their own. Unity and Unreal Engine plugins and native C++ games are listed as coming soon.
Self-Improving Harness
The FAQ says the tools, skills and prompts live in a git repository the app can edit. A snapshot is taken before each change, a blind judge compares results, and a version that cannot start is rolled back. This feature is described as experimental and off until the user turns it on.
