    About Grok Build

Grok Build is SpaceXAI's terminal-based AI coding agent, distributed as the grok CLI/TUI. It understands a codebase, edits files, runs shell commands, searches the web, and manages long-running tasks. The repository contains the Rust source for the CLI and its agent runtime, and is synced periodically from the SpaceXAI monorepo.

    What It Is

Grok Build is a coding agent harness with a full-screen, mouse-interactive terminal interface. It can be used interactively, run headlessly for scripting and CI, or embedded in editors through the Agent Client Protocol (ACP). On first launch it opens a browser to authenticate.

    Setup Path

Prebuilt binaries are published for macOS, Linux, and Windows, installed through a shell script or a PowerShell script, and verified with grok --version. Building from source requires the pinned Rust toolchain, DotSlash, and protoc. macOS and Linux are the supported build hosts, while Windows builds are best-effort and not currently tested from the source tree.

    Extensibility and Documentation

The bundled user guide covers getting started, keyboard shortcuts, slash commands, configuration, theming, MCP servers, skills, plugins, hooks, headless mode, and sandboxing. The workspace is split into crates for the TUI, the agent runtime, tool implementations (terminal, file edit, search), and the host workspace (filesystem, VCS, execution, checkpoints).

    Licensing and Contributions

First-party code is licensed under Apache 2.0, while third-party and vendored code keeps its original licenses. External contributions are not accepted.
