MacWhisper

MacWhisper is a Mac transcription app built by Jordi Bruin and friends at Good Snooze in the Netherlands. It transcribes dropped files, YouTube and podcast URLs, records online meetings without bots joining, and provides system-wide dictation. Files can be processed locally with on-device models.

What It Is

MacWhisper is a desktop transcription tool for macOS. Users drag and drop audio or video files (mp3, wav, m4a, ogg, opus, mov, mp4) or record from the Mac microphone, and receive text transcripts in over 100 languages. The site describes automatic speaker recognition, filler-word cleanup, translation, search, a built-in editor and batch transcription. Transcripts export as subtitles (.srt, .vtt) and documents or text formats such as .txt, .md, .pdf, .html and .docx.

Meetings and Dictation

The app detects and records meetings in Zoom, Teams, Webex, Skype, Chime, Discord and more, capturing app audio without a bot. System-wide dictation lets users speak into any app, with grammar improvement and AI prompts, including app-specific prompts.

Privacy and Local Processing

The site says local models transcribe files offline so content does not leave the Mac.

AI Services and Workflow

Users can summarize, chat with transcripts and apply custom prompts, using local models via Ollama and LM Studio or cloud providers with their own API keys, including custom OpenAI-compatible endpoints. Watched folders auto-transcribe new files, and transcripts can be sent to Notion, Zapier, Obsidian, n8n, Make.com or a custom webhook. A CLI allows control from scripts and agent workflows.
