About OpenBot
OpenBot is a local-first desktop app for persistent AI teammates, published by Synthetify Labs (nightly-labs on GitHub). Each agent gets its own workspace and conversation, and agents can message each other, hand off tasks and share files. It runs on macOS, Windows and Linux, and the project describes itself as a development preview.
What It Is
OpenBot is an agent workspace that sits on top of AI coding and assistant CLIs. It supports Codex, Claude Code, Gemini, Grok, OpenCode, Cursor and Cline, and can also connect to any OpenAI-compatible endpoint or to local models in Ollama or LM Studio. Users describe an agent in one prompt, review its instructions, and save it. Work can be queued for an agent while it is busy.
How Agents Work Together
Agents have their own instructions, avatar, and workspace under a per-agent local folder, plus a shared folder for exchanging files. They exchange messages, replies, reactions, images, and managed file transfers. Shared channel chats assign a single task owner with explicit delegation and controls such as Stop, Resume, Reassign, Archive and Restore. A persistent built-in browser lets agents open, read and control pages. Optional Computer Use is available on macOS, Windows and Linux. Agents can also create reusable local skills, and a marketplace offers agents, skills and plugins.
Providers and Data Location
An agent keeps its workspace and conversation when it is moved to a different provider. Workspaces, conversations, files and browser data stay on the computer running OpenBot, while the chosen AI provider receives the prompts the agents send. Providers sign in with plans users already have, such as a ChatGPT or Claude plan. An account is not required, only to invite team members. A self-hosted server option exists for Ubuntu with systemd, and as a Docker container.
Current Status and Licensing
The README warns that agents currently run with full access and no per-action approvals, so only trusted tasks should be given to them and backups kept. The source is public under the PolyForm Noncommercial License 1.0.0, which permits noncommercial use only; commercial use needs a separate license. The latest release listed is v0.30.0.
