About ThinkRail
ThinkRail is an open-source agentic IDE from JetBrains InnovationHub, released under Apache-2.0. It wraps the pi coding agent in a workbench with Monaco editor tabs, terminals, diffs, and isolated git-worktree workspaces. It is available as a desktop app for macOS, Windows, and Linux, or as a thinkrail CLI that opens the same app in the browser.
What It Is
ThinkRail is a desktop and browser-based IDE for working with a coding agent. You open a local git repo as a project and cut workspaces from it as git worktrees, each with its own branch, files, terminals, and chats. The agent runs in-process through pi, which owns models, skills, compaction, cost, and session state, while ThinkRail owns the workspace, editor, and wire protocol.
Workspaces and the IDE
Each workspace scopes its Files tree, Changes diff, terminals, and chats to one worktree, so several agents can work in parallel without touching your checkout. The topbar tracks the branch against origin and its pull request, and for GitHub PRs it shows CI checks and review decisions and offers publish, push, and merge actions. Reviewers can leave anchored comments on files and diffs and send them to a chat as structured context.
Specs, skills, and tools
A graph of SPEC.md files sits beside the code, and the agent reads, searches, and maintains it through dedicated spec_* tools. The Specs tab renders the graph as a tree. The README also describes portable Agent Skills, bundled workflows, web research, inline diagrams and mockups, subagents, and MCP server connections with approval prompts for calls not marked read-only.
Setup path
The CLI installs with a shell or PowerShell script and requires git plus an authenticated pi provider; users can sign in with JetBrains AI or bring their own provider credentials. The README notes usage analytics tied to a random installation ID, with additional sharing controlled in Settings → Privacy.
