About Xcode 26
Xcode 26 is Apple's IDE for building apps across Apple platforms including iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, Apple Vision Pro, and Apple TV. This release added integrated AI coding assistance with ChatGPT and native Claude account sign-in from the Intelligence panel, plus support for bringing your own provider keys. The assistant can answer questions about Swift and frameworks, suggest and edit code, help with refactors, and generate tests.
Version 26.3 introduces agentic coding, a major expansion that gives AI agents autonomous control over complex development tasks. Developers can integrate Anthropic's Claude Agent and OpenAI's Codex with one-click installation from Xcode settings, with agents kept up-to-date automatically. These agents can break down tasks, explore file structures, update project settings, build projects, run tests, and search Apple documentation directly. Agents verify their work visually by capturing Xcode Previews and iterating through builds and fixes until complete.
Xcode 26.3 exposes its capabilities through the Model Context Protocol, enabling any MCP-compatible agent or tool to integrate with Xcode. Settings include options to allow agents internet access and optional Bash command line execution. The transcript sidebar lets developers follow agent activity in real-time and revert to any prior state if needed.
- Agentic Coding - AI agents work autonomously across the entire development lifecycle with access to builds, tests, previews, and documentation
- One-Click Agent Install - Claude Agent and Codex integrate directly from Xcode settings with automatic updates
- Visual Verification - Agents capture Xcode Previews to verify UI output and iterate on SwiftUI views
- Project-Wide Reasoning - Agents explore full file structures and understand app architecture before making changes
- MCP Support - Open standard protocol allows any compatible agent to access Xcode capabilities
- Predictive Code Completion - On-device ML model trained for Swift and Apple SDKs provides context-aware suggestions
- Coding Tools - Writing Tools-style assistance for code, tests, and documentation directly in the source editor
Core IDE tools include the build system, Interface Builder, Instruments profiling, Swift Testing framework, Xcode Cloud CI/CD, Simulator, and app signing and distribution.
See the Meet agentic coding in Xcode tech talk for a walkthrough of the new capabilities.
