About Xiryn
Xiryn is an open-source personal agent built by Sourav Bera and released under the MIT license. Each agent works on its own Linux desktop inside Docker on the user's machine, so it can browse, research, write and run code in the background without taking over the user's mouse, screen or files. The latest release listed on GitHub is v0.4.1, published 2026-10-11.
What It Is
Xiryn is a self-hosted, local-first agent application. A Next.js server runs on 127.0.0.1, serves the interface, executes agent turns in-process and stores conversations, memory, settings and keys in a single SQLite file on disk. Users add an API key for a model provider (or point it at a local runtime), create agents with a name, role, standing orders and model, and give them tasks. Agents can research the web with cited sources, build and debug code, write documents, fill in forms and prepare bookings or orders.
How the agent workstation works
Every agent gets a Docker container with a shell, files, a persistent home folder and a 1280×800 desktop with Chromium. Users can watch the desktop live, click Take over to pause the agent and operate it themselves, then hand control back with a note. At logins, payments, one-time codes or CAPTCHAs the agent stops and hands over the screen. Machines can be reset or deleted, and auto-delete can remove workstations after each session while the agent's memory stays on disk. Agents can also be grouped into squads and delegate work to one another, each with its own model and machine.
Vault, payments and privacy
Xiryn says it has no accounts, no servers and no telemetry. Logins, cards, UPI IDs and personal details can be saved in an encrypted vault using AES-256-GCM, with the key held by the operating system keychain. Agents see only masked hints such as the last four digits; Xiryn types values into pages itself, and each payment requires explicit approval in the app or via Telegram. The only outbound calls are those the user configures, such as the model provider, Firecrawl or Telegram, plus an optional update check against GitHub that can be switched off.
Models and remote control
Supported providers include OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, xAI, Groq, Mistral, DeepSeek, OpenRouter, Ollama, LM Studio and any OpenAI-compatible endpoint, selectable per agent. Telegram can be paired by scanning a QR code; the bot polls from the user's machine, so no public URL or port forwarding is needed. It supports commands such as /agents, /new, /stop and /status, and sends notifications and live desktop links for hand-offs. Browser speech recognition allows voice input, and agents keep working if the tab is closed.
Setup path
A single command for macOS/Linux (setup.sh) or Windows PowerShell (setup.ps1) installs Git, Node.js and Docker if missing, builds the agents' desktop image and starts Xiryn at 127.0.0.1:6796. About 4 GB of free disk and a model provider key are needed. Manual installation requires Node.js 20.9+ and Docker. The README lists scheduled tasks, more chat channels, MCP connectors and shareable templates as roadmap ideas that are not yet shipped.
