Founding Story
The ASF grew out of the 'Apache Group', which formed in 1995 to maintain and improve the NCSA HTTPd server. It was formalized as a non-profit in 1999 to provide a legal 'shield' for individual contributors and to manage the assets and brand of the growing number of projects.
